Things to do (not all in one day):
Layout and cut parts for replacement Outrigger
Plan out and make the wooden glove box, use box joints, drill drain holes in it
Continue making turned parts
Sand wooden parts
Prime wooden parts
Make replacement metal parts from rod stock

7/10/10 Velocipede Work Day 24
Paul and Setsuko Kashitani, Geoff Watson, Sandie Matsuura, Carol Hamamura, Roy and Mary Tsugawa
Mary and Geoff turned a replacement vertical spindle
Drilled the new spindle
Roy cut the tail fins and seat boards
Shaped the seat boards on the disk sander
Patched imperfections in the board joints and some of the spindles
Hand sanded the seat and shelf boards and the support rails and the spindles
Drilled the frame rails and thinned the lower rails to match the hardware
Dry assembled the new velocipede frame and located the holes for the hardware that spans the top and bottom rails.

Roy and Mary glued up boards to make wide planks for the cargo tray and seat
Geoff sanded the glue ups smooth
Roy made blanks for all the turnings
Fred, Paul, and Geoff laid out the plans for the replacement outrigger
Geoff made the seat rails and cargo tray support rails
Setsuko and Dan and the kids sanded the parts
Laid out seat profile onto the planks but did not cut them out yet

Scuff sanded the metal parts
Painted metal parts black and wooden dog bones red
Did final checks and adjustments to the frame rail hole layout and center punched the holes

Scuff sanded the primed metal parts
Primed a few parts
Painted most of the metal parts black
Laid out the holes for the mechanical and connecting parts of the 4 frame rails

5/29/10 Velocipede Work Day 20
Carol Hamamura, Geoff Watson, Paul and Setsuko Kashitani, Erik McBeth, Mark Kawamoto, Dan Palomino, Cliff Rapp, Roy and Mary Tsugawa
Carol, Mary, Erik, Paul, Setsuko, and Mark cleaned the metal parts, treated them with phosphoric acid, and degreased the parts.
Dan, Setsuko, Mark, and Mary dried the parts with a towel and a heat gun.
Roy and Geoff ripped, planed, and trimmed the four frame rails.
Mark, Dan, Cliff, Mary, Paul, and Setsuko primed the metal parts using POR-15.
Geoff and Roy used taps and dies to chase the threads on the threaded metal parts.
Geoff and Roy started the wooden parts inventory and selected the blanks for the main handle lever arm and some turnings.

Fred removed the metal brace from the outrigger boom by cutting it out with a saw
Lillian finished sanding the metal parts and sorted them
Fred and Mary stripped the outrigger support rod
Geoff and Roy cut the front wheel rim screws to uniform lengths
Roy shaped epoxy putty to the right contours for the dog bone and a metal flange

Paul used stationary and portable wire wheels to clean the main drive gear
Mary and Roy made jigs for holding the front wheel for drilling rim holes at 4.5 degree angle

Paul, Carol, and Erik continued stripping the metal pieces and started sanding the rust off
Mark and Geoff scuff sanded the primed spokes and rim parts
Mark, Geoff, and Mary put the first coat of Red FlexCote on the spokes and rim parts
Roy patched the wooden connecting rod and seat support with epoxy putty
Continued parts inventory to determine turnings that need replacement

Paul, Setsuko, Fred, and Jan stripped metal parts
Mark and Geoff sanded and fit wooden parts into the front wheel rim
Mary completed measuring and drawing the velocipede components (handles, seat, and glove box, and brake)
Mary and Roy assembled the outrigger wheel and completed it

Sandie and Carol continued stripping the various wooden and metal velocipede frame and drivetrain parts
Mary took detailed measurements of the Velocipede frame railsThings to do (not all in one day):
Fitted parts of the rear wheel and drilled holes to accommodate ¼ and 3/8 inch bolts
Found that the rim holes are angled
Also found that the holes are not completely uniformly spaced
Assembled rear wheel and glued cracked spoke
Touched up scratches in the red and black finish (still need to seal gaps between spokes with clear silicon before putting velocipede outside
Delivered completed rear wheel to Faith at the Lomita Railroad Museum for interpretive display until we need it back for final assembly

Began adjusting new wooden parts to fit the pattern. Decided to shim the thick rim pieces and remake 1 thick rim part and all 6 thin rim parts.

Sandie and Erik sanded and primed wooden velocipede wheel parts using Zinsser latex primer (didn't stick to the oily wood)
Mark cleaned and phosphated and primed the outrigger support bar, rear wheel rim, and rear wheel axle with POR-15
Mark and Sandie put 1 coat of black paint on the metal parts that had been previously primed, including the outrigger wheel parts, front wheel parts, and bearing holders.
Mary and Sandie and Roy began stripping and peeling off the latex primer from the wooden parts - the latex did not stick to the old oily wood
Mary prepared a delicious lunch featuring refreshing Gazpacho soup

Dan used a rotary abrasive wheel and wire brushes to clean the rust from the front wheel rim
Used phosphoric acid to clean the lip of the front wheel rim and applied epoxy putty to fix holes and seal lip
Sanded POR15 drips from the front and outrigger axles

Setsuko used Marine Clean, Metal Ready, and POR-15 on the outrigger and front wheel hubs
Geoff made hardboard patterns for the rear wheel, having completed patterns for the outrigger and front wheels
The outrigger wooden parts are all sound and Dan stripped the spokes. Only the rim pieces remain to be stripped.
The front wheel needs 100% replacement of every wooden part.
The rear wheel needs repair or replacement of only one spoke, the rest appears sound.
Paul and Erik and Roy continued to strip metal parts.
Mary baked and prepared lunch for everyone.

Assessed wooden parts of wheels, found front wheel needs 100% rebuild, outrigger wheel may be salvageable
Began making full sized templates of wheel parts that need to be replaced, about 2/3’s complete
